MASTERCLASS: THE GRIEVING ADOLESCENT

The Grieving Adolescent, Dr Michael Carr-Gregg 1:08
WATCH HERE

When adolescents experience a death, workers with young people in health education and welfare are often concerned about how best to support and meet their needs. After 30 years of working with teenagers, Michael maintains that adolescents express and process grief in a variety of ways depending on their age, personality, past experience of loss, support systems, and the context of the bereavement.

This masterclass is designed to help participants to understand and support adolescents to navigate their grief experience. The class will cover:

  • The historical perspective on loss and grief

  • The most common grief responses in young people

  • The signs that a young person is not coping and should seek professional support

  • Explains how to listen and talk with the bereaved adolescent

  • How to encourage young people to gather stories and memories of the person

  • How to provide support leading up to anniversaries

Michael believes that with good information, love and support, adolescents can learn to understand and work with their grief.
